Mikautadze starts the turnaround
Villarreal recovered from an early deficit to beat Napoli 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League League Stage - 2 at Estadio de la Cerámica. Napoli took the lead in the 8th minute when Amir Rrahmani scored for 0-1. Villarreal levelled through Georges Mikautadze in the 23rd minute, making it 1-1.
The decisive first-half turn came three minutes later. Álvaro Santiago Mouriño González scored in the 26th minute, with Gerard Moreno providing the assist, to put Villarreal 2-1 ahead at half-time. The result was sealed in the 86th minute when substitute Tani Oluwaseyi scored for 3-1, assisted by Ayoze Pérez. That was the final goal of the match.
Villarreal had more attempts, Napoli had the higher xG
The statistics showed an uneven balance beneath the scoreline. Villarreal had 52% possession, completed 385 accurate passes and registered 16 shots to Napoli's 9. Napoli's expected-goals figure was higher, however, at 1.94 to Villarreal's 1.42, so the scoreline did not mirror that measure of chance quality.
The match produced five yellow cards and no red cards. Villarreal's Mikautadze was booked in the 33rd minute, while Napoli's Giovane Santana Do Nascimento, Kevin De Bruyne and Giovanni Di Lorenzo were cautioned, alongside Villarreal's Nathan-Dylan Saliba.
