Josh Sargent’s 86th-minute goal lifts Toronto FC over DC United

Toronto FC beat DC United 2-1, with Josh Sargent’s 86th-minute goal completing a comeback at BMO Field. The late finish changed the result after DC United led at half-time, 0-1.

Sargent delivers the decisive moment

Andre Dozzell opened the scoring for DC United in the 29th minute, making it 0-1 after an assist from Silvan Hefti. Toronto FC responded in the 64th minute when Jonathan Osorio levelled the match at 1-1, assisted by Sargent.

Sargent then struck in the 86th minute for the last goal of the match, putting Toronto FC 2-1 ahead. The forward finished with a match rating of 9.0, one goal, one assist and four key passes in 90 minutes.

Toronto controlled the ball after falling behind

Toronto FC had 62% possession and completed 391 accurate passes to DC United’s 217. The hosts also held an expected-goals edge, 1.55 to 1.11, although both teams recorded nine total shots and two shots on goal. That made the final score more closely contested by shot count than the possession figures suggested.

The match produced six yellow cards, three for each team. Toronto’s cautions went to Niklas Dorsch, Dániel Sallói and Matheus Pereira de Souza, while DC United’s went to Kye Rowles, Kimito Nono and Jared Stroud. Neither team received a red card.

Toronto widens the conference gap

Toronto went into the game #11 in the Eastern Conference on 36 points, three ahead of DC United, who were #13 on 33 points. After the result, Toronto have 39 points and are level with one other team, so their position is provisional. DC United remain provisionally #13 on 33 points, leaving Toronto six points ahead.
