Vancouver Whitecaps Seal 2-0 Seattle Victory with Late Goals
How the match unfolded, with the data behind it
Vancouver Whitecaps turned territorial dominance into a 2-0 win through late goals from R. Elloumi and Thomas Müller. Their superior possession, 17-5 shot advantage and five shots on target underlined a deserved victory, while Seattle’s lack of shots on target and three yellow cards summed up a difficult evening.
Late Goals Send Vancouver Whitecaps to Victory in Seattle
Vancouver Whitecaps left Lumen Field with a 2-0 victory over Seattle Sounders, scoring twice in the final 15 minutes to settle a goalless Major League Soccer Regular Season - 19 match. R. Elloumi and Thomas Müller provided the decisive goals as Vancouver’s stronger control of possession and attacking volume eventually told.
Whitecaps Strike Late
Seattle held Vancouver at bay for much of the match, but the visitors broke through in the 77th minute. R. Elloumi opened the scoring with a normal goal assisted by E. Sabbi, giving Vancouver the advantage after a sustained period of pressure.
The Whitecaps then added a second five minutes later. Thomas Müller found the net in the 82nd minute after being set up by Oliver Larraz, turning a narrow contest into a comfortable away win and leaving Seattle without a shot on target to mount a response.
Vancouver Control the Attacking Numbers
Vancouver controlled the overall attacking numbers, holding 58% possession and completing 538 passes with 86% accuracy. Seattle had 42% of the ball, completed 402 passes and produced only five total shots, compared with 17 from the Whitecaps.
The visitors also held a clear edge in territory and chance creation, earning eight corners while Seattle had none. Vancouver recorded five shots on target and forced four saves, whereas Seattle’s goalkeeper was the busier player; despite that, the Whitecaps’ goalkeeper was not required to make a save, and the expected-goals figures favored Vancouver 1.30 to 0.57.
Seattle’s Disciplinary Pressure
Seattle’s defensive pressure was reflected in the disciplinary figures. J. Ragen received a yellow card in the 57th minute, followed by Nouhou in the 76th, immediately before Elloumi’s opener changed the match.
P. Rothrock was also cautioned in the 86th minute, meaning all three yellow cards went to Seattle players. The Sounders committed 15 fouls to Vancouver’s 10, while both teams were called offside twice, but the Whitecaps maintained their discipline and finished without a booking.
Table Consequences and Standout Performers
The result kept Vancouver second in the Western Conference with 34 points from 17 matches, including 10 wins, four draws and three defeats, alongside a plus-21 goal difference. Seattle remained 11th with 24 points from 17 games, a record of seven wins, three draws and seven losses and a minus-two goal difference.
Thomas Müller was the standout performer, earning a 7.9 rating after playing 92 minutes and producing the second goal plus three shots on target. Larraz also made a major contribution, supplying the assist for Müller and creating four key passes as Vancouver extended its run of four consecutive wins, while Seattle’s defeat followed six straight losses in its pre-match form.
