M. Torres and A. Auzmendi test Estudiantes’ home defence

The pre-match question: can Estudiantes contain Gimnasia’s attack?

The provisional pre-match Clausura Group B standings place Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto #15 with 9 points from 14 games, while Gimnasia L.P. are #3 with 25 points from 14. The gap is also clear in Apertura Group B: Gimnasia were #6 with 26 points, compared with Estudiantes at #15 with 5. Gimnasia are 21 points ahead in that table.

The supplied form sample covers 30 matches for Estudiantes and 32 for Gimnasia. Estudiantes’ five most recent results are loss, draw, loss, loss, loss; Gimnasia’s are win, loss, win, loss, draw. That recent sequence gives the visitors the more positive latest result, but it does not settle how this match will develop.

Home defence against away scoring

Estudiantes’ home record this season is 3 wins, 3 draws and 9 losses. They have scored 8 home goals, conceded 16 and kept 5 home clean sheets. Gimnasia’s away record is 8 wins, 3 draws and 6 losses, with 18 goals scored, 22 conceded and 3 clean sheets.

Gimnasia’s main identified goal threats are M. Torres, with 9 goals and 2 assists in 26 appearances, and A. Auzmendi, with 7 goals and 3 assists in 32 appearances. Gimnasia most often use 4-2-3-1, while Estudiantes’ most-used shape is 3-1-4-2; those formations describe selection patterns, not a guaranteed match plan.

At Antonio Candini on Friday, October 30, the key question is whether Estudiantes’ home defence can limit Torres and Auzmendi before Gimnasia’s stronger away record decides the contest.
